5 Signs You’re Ready to Join a Trauma-Aware Programme after Abuse
After domestic abuse or trauma, it’s natural to wonder when - or if - you’ll feel like yourself again. You might ask: Am I ready to try something new? Am I strong enough to join a programme like Survivor Steps?
The truth is, there’s no “perfect moment”. But there are a few gentle signs that show you’re ready to explore a trauma-aware movement programme.
You want to feel more confident in your body
You don’t have to love exercise. This isn’t about fitness goals - it’s about reconnecting with your body in safe, gentle ways. If you want to feel more at ease in your own skin, that’s a sign you’re ready.
You’re looking for healthy ways to cope with stress or triggers
Movement can help regulate emotions, calm your nervous system and give you tools to handle triggering moments. If you’re tired of feeling overwhelmed, a structured programme can support you.
You want to connect with others who understand
Healing (rediscovery) can feel lonely. Being in a space with others who “get it” can make all the difference. Survivor Steps offers community as well as individual growth.
You’ve tried other approaches but want something different
Traditional gyms or classes might feel intimidating or unsafe. Trauma-aware programmes are designed with survivors in mind - gentle, flexible and focused on safety.
You’re ready to take one small step forward
You don’t need to be “healed” or “over it”. Bring ready simply means you want to explore something new that supports you. Survivor Steps is built to meet you where you are.
If even one of these signs feels true for you, you might be ready to join us. Our September Survivor Steps programme is fully booked, but registration has opened for January 2026.
